"How to Defend Yourself" by Liliana Padilla at Clarence Brown Theatre
Clarence Brown Theatre presents How to Defend Yourself, a powerful and timely play by Liliana Padilla, running from October 23 to November 10, 2024. This sharp, witty, and emotionally charged production centers around a group of college students who come together for a DIY self-defense workshop after a sorority sister is assaulted.
Through humor and ferocity, the play explores the complexities of trauma, healing, and empowerment. As the characters work through their rage, confusion, anxiety, and desire, the workshop becomes more than just a way to learn physical self-defense—it becomes a space for reclaiming their sense of agency and belonging. How to Defend Yourself delves into how sexual assault disrupts lives and relationships, and the challenging process of finding strength and solidarity in its aftermath.
With its unflinching portrayal of trauma and resilience, Padilla’s play offers audiences an opportunity to reflect on the personal and societal impacts of sexual violence while spotlighting the importance of self-defense, both physical and emotional.
Don’t miss this thought-provoking and impactful production. It’s a story of survival, empowerment, and the journey to reclaim what’s been lost. More Info
