Whoa Doggie Wins First Place at NYC Hot Sauce Expo
Knoxville-based hot sauce company Whoa Doggie took home first place in the Habanero category at the 11th Annual NYC Hot Sauce Expo held in Brooklyn, New York, on September 21-22. Their award-winning sauce, Alpha Dog, is a bold blend of Red Savina Habanero peppers and garlic, designed to offer a flavorful and spicier version of their signature cayenne garlic hot sauce. The prestigious Screaming Mi Mi Awards, a key part of the expo, celebrate the best in hot sauces and spicy foods, with winners determined by a panel of judges, including celebrity chefs, food writers, bloggers, and industry professionals.
The Screaming Mi Mi Awards, one of the most respected competitions for hot sauces in North America, features 19 categories with top honors awarded to first, second, and third-place winners. This year, the Grand World Champion title went to Hell’s Kitchen’s Cinnamon Ghost Punch. However, Whoa Doggie's top finish in the Habanero category places them among the best, solidifying their reputation in the craft hot sauce industry.
Billy Rivet, founder of Whoa Doggie, explained that Alpha Dog was created to bring a spicier option to their lineup. The company, founded in February 2023 by Billy and his wife Heather Rivet, focuses on crafting small-batch, artisan hot sauces that are gluten-free, vegan, and part of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s Pick Tennessee Products program, which promotes locally sourced, high-quality products.
Billy, originally from New Orleans, began experimenting with hot sauce creation after receiving a sauce-making kit from Heather. His love for bold, spicy flavors from his Cajun roots sparked the start of Whoa Doggie, and the couple has since grown the business, marketing their sauces locally in Knoxville and through select retail locations.
The NYC Hot Sauce Expo is a significant event in the spicy food community, featuring vendors, food, craft beers, and extreme eating contests. Whoa Doggie, now celebrating its first anniversary, offers a line of six unique sauces available online at whoadoggiesauces.com, at local markets, and at several Knoxville restaurants including SoKno Cantina, Sevier Ave Burger Co., and Central Flats & Taps.
Whoa Doggie continues to grow in popularity, offering spice lovers in Knoxville and beyond a taste of Southern heat and flavor, with plans for further expansion in the coming years.
