Presidents Day Now a School Day Following Snowstorm Closures

Due to the snowstorm last month, today - Presidents Day on February 19th, typically a holiday for students, will now be a regular day of classes.

Following the depletion of all inclement weather days in January, the Knox County School Board decided on February 8 to adjust the current school year's calendar.

The previously scheduled early release on March 20 has also been revoked.

This school year, Knox County Schools allocated eight days for closures due to bad weather, all of which were used up in the wake of the recent winter storm. Historically, the district reserved 10 days for such circumstances, adjusting this number when early release days were incorporated into the schedule.

The school year will conclude on May 23. For details on the revised academic calendar, please visit the Knox County Schools website at www.knoxschools.org/calendars.

Tonka's Big Move: Zoo Knoxville's Largest Elephant Prepares for Sanctuary Move

Tonka, the largest bull African Elephant in North America and a resident of Zoo Knoxville, is set to move to an Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee, in the coming months. This move presents unique challenges, particularly in transporting Tonka due to his substantial size of 16,000 pounds.

Unlike the crates used for the zoo's other elephants, a custom crate is being constructed by Petty's Welding. The zoo is preparing Tonka for the move through acclimation training, using positive reinforcement to ensure his comfort with the process. After Tonka's relocation, Zoo Knoxville plans to repurpose the elephant enclosure for white rhinos, with no plans to house more elephants.

Voices of Resilience: Carmen Winant's Exhibit on Domestic Violence at Knoxville Museum of Art

The Knoxville Museum of Art is currently hosting an exhibit on its third floor created by Philadelphia-based artist Carmen Winant. This exhibit is dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence. It features a collection of newspaper clippings that narrate stories of violence from across the country, accompanied by resources for individuals who may be experiencing domestic violence.

Winant's powerful artwork will be available for viewing until Sunday, April 14th. The exhibit aims to foster a sense of community and support, emphasizing the importance of individual stories and voices in the fight against domestic violence.
