Proposed Tennessee Bill Could Allow Local Governments to Lower Grocery Tax, Impacting School Funding

Senate Bill 2520, proposed in the Tennessee General Assembly, could allow local governments to lower the grocery tax, currently 2.25% in Knox County plus a 4.00% state sales tax. This tax primarily funds the Knox County school system, with 72% of sales tax revenue dedicated to education due to a 1960s mandate.

Knox County's commitment to never reduce school funding, known as 'Maintenance of Effort,' could be at risk if the grocery tax is lowered, affecting school financing. However, counties near states without a food sales tax might find reducing the tax beneficial for keeping shoppers local. The bill, which also affects county road maintenance and government functions, is set for a subcommittee discussion on Tuesday, March 5th.

A Golden Retriever's Guide to Knoxville in 'Welcome to Barxville' Dogumentary

Visit Knoxville has unveiled "Welcome to Barxville, A Knoxville Dogumentary," a film narrated through the adventures of Hank, a Golden Retriever exploring Knoxville for the first time. This nine-minute feature takes viewers on a journey across various city landmarks from a dog's perspective, including Market Square, Gay Street's skyscrapers, a local coffee shop, the Sunsphere, and a hiking trail.

Highlighting Knoxville's dog-friendly nature, the film showcases spots like World's Fair Park, Urban Wilderness, and more, emphasizing that the city is a welcoming playground for dogs and their owners. Through Hank's adventures, Visit Knoxville illustrates the city's embrace of its four-legged visitors, presenting Knoxville as an ideal destination for pet lovers. Watch it here
